Scans

Types of Scan

MRI - Magnetic resonance imaging scan device in Hospital. Medical Equipment and Health Car

MRI

This type of scan uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images. The scanner is a narrow, hollow tube. You will lie flat on a bed that is moved into the scanner.

The radiographer controls the scanner from a different room; you can speak to them via an intercom, and they can always see you through a remote television monitor and the viewing window.

At certain times throughout the scan, it will make loud tapping noises. This is the electric current in the scanner coils being turned on and off.

The radiographer will give you instructions. The scan tends to last between 15 and 90 minutes.

CT Scan Machine

CT

CT scans are also known as CAT scans. Before having the scan, you may be given a special dye called contrast to help improve the quality of the images.

During the scan, you lie on a flat bed that is passed into the CT scanner. The scanner is a ring that rotates around a small section of the body as you pass through it.

The radiographer will operate the scanner from the room next door like an MRI. This can usually last around 10 to 20 minutes.

X Ray

You will be asked to either stand against a flat surface or lie on a table so that the part of your body being examined is in the correct place.

The X-ray machine, which looks like a tube containing a giant light bulb, will be carefully aimed at the correct position.

As with all scans, you need to stay still so the image isn't blurred.
